angela + curt

Last summer a few friends from high school got together to catch up. On that day we asked our friend Angela if her and her fiancé had set a wedding date. She giggled and didn't answer right away, so we knew something was up. Turns out she was planning on getting married the following week! 

She and her fiancé Curt didn't want a huge ceremony, so they decided to get married and celebrate with the couple that had set them up. They then spent the following weekend up north. 

Soon after they were married, Angela asked me to help her with invites for the reception. I gladly obliged and created the following invites for their fall reception in Madison. 

The reception was held at The Bayou, a New Orleans inspired restaurant in Madison. It is one of Curt and Angela's favorite restaurants. I arrived early to help them set up some autumnal decorations which included vases filled with pumpkins and pinecones, leaves and awesome slabs of wood that Curt and his son Owen cut and finished. There were also little matchbook paper crafts that Angela had made, each which held a mint inside. 

The afternoon was filled with friends and family talking and drinking. Many of the kids hung out upstairs running and jumping around. 

Dinner was amazing. Eric and I got to choose different meals so we could try each other's. He got the chicken pasta in creole sauce while I got the crab stuffed salmon. 

After dinner the couple showed a slideshow which included pictures of both Angela and Curt over the years - both their individual lives growing up until the time they had spent together over the past couple of years. Unfortunately the slideshow kept going silent every now and then and since my husband Eric was sitting next to it, he was in charge to fix it. Every time the music would stop, you'd hear Angela and others yelling across the room "ERIC!" to remind him to get the music started again. 

After the slideshow, Angela's three brothers gave speeches. Each speech was very heartfelt, especially her youngest brother Jordan, who probably made everyone cry. 

I'm glad we were able to celebrate with this wonderful couple. Angela and Curt are perfect together. They are going to have so many fun adventures together! 

oreo party, part 2

I had a lot of fun making things for the Oreo Party. The first thing I made was the invite. I really wish I could take credit for the text, but it was something I remember hearing back in middle school. I didn't listen to the New Kids on the Block, but knew of them because of a neighbor who was into them. I can't tell you exactly who came up with the parody, but I remember a good friend told me about it and I thought it was hilarious. Now years later, the joke makes it onto an invite for an Oreo party. Pretty crazy. 

[UPDATE: I just learned that Weird Al wrote the Oreo parody of NKOTB's 'The Right Stuff'. My childhood feels like a lie because I wasn't told that until now. Bummer. However, I do want to thank Liz for pointing out my mistake. I'm sure the rest of you are just laughing behind my back for not knowing, which isn't very nice!]

Before I go into more details about decorations, I want to show that Herbie is a good helper and likes to be involved in photo shoots. 

Back to the decorations. I thought it would be nice to have signs by each Oreo. I could have kept all the Oreos in their original packaging, but what fun would that be? They needed to be nicely presented, so I convinced my friend Megan [who has the best handwriting ever] to write each flavor on black card stock. 

Megan also helped me with tassel garland [seen above next to the invites] which was quite easy after following some directions I found online. It was also a very cheap project as the tissue paper was on clearance at Target. 

A few weeks before the party, I found this amazing Ziggy cartoon in the free Wednesday paper we get. It was fate. 

It was probably a few days before the party that I randomly remembered I had an autographed picture of Chubby Checker with an Oreo mascot. Luckily it was in my autograph binder [yes, I have a binder of autographs, most more embarrassing than this] and it was easy to find. My memory tells me that I got this as a young girl while grocery shopping with my mom at Pick 'N Save one Saturday morning. My mom has not been able to confirm nor deny this memory, so I will just stick with it. 

If you saw my post about my cousin's baby shower, you've seen these milk cartons before. I had a bunch left over so I decided to decorate them with black and white washi tape, stamp OREO on them and use them for people to take extra cookies home in. 

The straws and napkins I had were bought at Target. The super cute cups are from Susty Party [I used some of their plates for my wedding reception and I love their products]. 

There were a bunch of cookies left after the Oreo party, even though everyone took some home. Since I still had some of each cookie left, I thought it would be fun to take pictures of each flavor.

katie's baby shower

Last year was the year of parties for my family. There were two weddings, a group birthday party, and finally a baby shower. The shower was for my cousin Katie and took place in October, about a month before she was due with her first baby. 

I helped to create the invites and some of the games [although I should mention that my other cousin Sam helped me think of game ideas]. 

One of the games we played was shower libs which was quite fun. Personally, I felt the best results came from those who didn't answer theirs so seriously.

There also was a baby animal game I put together where you had to match the animal with its baby name. Luckily it wasn't as easy as I feared it might be and no one got a perfect score!

We also had everyone take a piece of yarn and cut it to the size they believed Katie's belly was. One of Katie's good friends got the closest with being just a few MILLIMETERS off. That's some good guessing. 

There was also a basket of diapers and everyone was encouraged to write a little message and slip the piece of paper in the diaper for Katie and Andy to read while changing the newborn. 

As little party favors on the tables, I put together milk cartons [I mean, how perfect is that for a dairy farmer?!] and put animal crackers inside. 

Many of Katie's family and friends attended. Some even came from out of state! We all had fun teasing Katie how both her and Andy were chunky little babies and how at a young age had the same haircut [see picture below]! 

Katie received many wonderful gifts she would be needing within the next couple of weeks. I think it's safe to say everyone had a wonderful time and it was definitely a nice party to end the year of the parties with. 

sam + drew get married, part 1

Over the next few posts I have quite a few pictures to share from my cousin Samantha's wedding. Sam and her fiancé Drew got engaged in northern Wisconsin so that is where they decided to get married, among close family and friends. 

I was thrilled to be asked to help with her invites as well as photograph their wedding! Below are the Save the Date postcards the couple sent out. 

Unfortunately because of work obligations my husband was not able to attend. Instead, I spent 5 days being the third wheel with my cousin Katie and her husband Andy. We drove up the Thursday before the wedding to spend our first night at Katie's family's cabin in St. Germain, WI. Growing up, my family would join Katie's and we'd spend some time at the cabin almost every summer. It had been quite a few years since I had been there, so it was nice to be back.

We arrived and immediately saw a deer! Best welcome ever.  

Before setting off for our first big adventure, we took our luggage inside and showed Andy around as he had never been to the cabin before. 

What was this big adventure, you are wondering? Sand collecting. 

Collecting sand sounds easy, correct? Yes. But not when there is only wet sand and you need it to be dried within a day. Because the couple had been engaged in St. Germain, they wanted sand from the local lake to use in the ceremony [to be poured together with another sand, instead of a unity candle]. 

As we went to collect the sand, we realized there was no dry sand to be found. Being the good sister Katie is, she collected said wet sand. We then headed back to the cabin where Katie and Andy laid it out on paper bags in hopes it would dry. 

This may have seemed like a good idea if it was around noon on a very hot day, however, it was not. Since the sun would be setting within an hour or two we thought there'd be no chance of the sand drying in time. 

Our next plan was to go find dry sand, even if it wasn't from the specific beach we were told to gather it from. So, off to another lake we went to get dry sand. 

Did I mention that Katie is a good sister? Of course, and that's why even though we now had the dry sand that we could have EASILY said was from the correct beach, Katie couldn't do it. 

We went to get supper and discussed our next move. Upon arriving back at the cabin, Andy tried to use a hair dryer to dry the sand. As you can probably guess, this was a mess.

We then decided we would bake it. I asked the Twitter world for help and no one out there had suggestions for me. [Thanks for not being there for me Twitter!]

Finally Katie just set the oven to 300 degrees and what would you know? DRY SAND! It took a few batches and the cabin ended up smelling a little bit like fish, but otherwise, SUCCESS! 

I really should think about putting that on my resume. Assisted in drying wet sand in a time crunch. 

wedding rehearsal invites + thank you cards

I talked about my wedding save the dates and invites yesterday. Today I will explain how I made the rehearsal invites and thank you cards. 

REHEARSAL INVITES

Something I didn't mention yesterday was the quantity of invites I ordered from Greener Printer. The website only lets you order a minimum of 50. Ideally that should have been enough, but it's always good to have a few extra so I had to bump it up to the next fixed amount of 75 [which was ok since it was only a couple dollars extra]. When I received the invites, they had actually sent me 80! [Maybe they always throw in a couple extra for free?!]

The point is - I had way too many invites, but since they are printed on nice kraft paper, I didn't want to waste them. So, for my wedding rehearsal invites I used the extra "glimpse" 4 x 6 cards. 

I created my text in Photoshop Elements and printed them out on card stock with crop marks . They measured 3.75 x 5.75 so they would be a bit smaller than the 4 x 6 cards.

Because of the crop marks, I was easily able to cut each invite out nicely. [I do have a paper cutter, but for this kind of job, I think it's much easier to use a ruler and knife to get the exact lines you want.]

After they were cut out, I used my tape roller to adhere the new invite onto the old one.

Since some people that were invited to the rehearsal were also invited to gift opening the day after the wedding, I printed out a little note to tie onto the invite.

I took my Martha Stewart screw punch to put a hole in the middle of the note. The reason for using the screw punch instead of a random hole punch is so that the eyelets fit perfectly. The screw punch can create three different sized holes and for eyelets the middle [3 mm] punch works perfectly. 

To set the eyelet I used my older eyelet setter. [This is what I used to use to punch the hole and set the eyelet, but I really dislike how loud / obnoxious this tool is.] 

To finalize this project, I strung some string into the eyelet and tied it around the invite - bow in the front and gift opening note in the back. 

THANK YOU CARDS

Originally I bought thank you cards to send out, however, the more I thought about them, I decided to use some leftover decorations from the wedding instead to create my own. As you will see in a later post, I used Instagram prints [printed by Origrami] as part of the decoration for the dinner tables. I ended up cutting these pictures down to fit on 4 bar cards I had gotten on clearance at Broadway Paper. [You can find them here though, in curry.]

To secure the pictures to the cards, I used black photo corners.

To complete the card, I used my Martha Stewart stamp set [seriously you guys, I'm not being paid for all the Martha products I use - I just really like them] to stamp "THANK YOU" onto the card. 

The envelopes I used were Paper-Source 4 bar envelopes [in sage I believe? I could be wrong...].

The whole process for all my wedding invites / cards may have taken a bit longer than just finding already made designs online and simply pressing "buy" - but I really enjoyed making everything. save the dates + wedding invites

I've already shared a little project I did for our wedding, but now onto something more substantial. 

SAVE THE DATES. 

I'm really excited how these turned out. I knew two things going into this project - I wanted kraft paper and white ink. Turns out printing white ink is a bit more complicated than I realized since it takes a LOT of ink. After much discussion with the fine folks at Execu Print, we decided the best process was to screen print on chipboard. The white turned out amazing and I love how thick the postcards were! 

My only complaint was that after they went through the machines at the post office, some of them got torn on the back. Not a huge deal - but something good to remember about sending chipboard through the mail.

INVITES

I chose to create the invites through Greener Printer. I randomly came across their website and sent away for a free sample pack of their paper. Everything about the paper in the sample pack was great so I decided to use them for printing. 

Using Greener Printer was actually very easy. I created my layout in Photoshop Elements, saved it as a PDF and sent it to Greener Printer. It took them a very short time to get back to me with the proofs. As soon as I gave them the green light, they printed them on 20 point kraft paper. 

I should point out I really wanted to do white ink on kraft paper [to try and stick with how my save the dates looked] but printing white ink was over TWICE the amount as black. It was a bit more than I planned on spending, so black ink it was! 

My invites came about a week later and I was quite happy with them - even with black ink. 

Note: the envelopes did not come with the invites. I bought the envelopes from Paper-Source. Main envelope is mint and RSVP envelope is curry.

To bundle everything together, I created a strip of paper to wrap around. I took my Martha Stewart scoring board and began scoring white card stock. To begin, I'd lay one side of the paper along the triangle piece and score every half inch.

After the whole sheet was scored, I flipped it 90 degrees and once again scored every half inch.

Once that was done, I removed the triangle piece and laid the paper against the top of the grid so all the lines have formed diamonds. This is the tricky part as for some reason there's no good measurement where to put the third line, so it's a guessing game. Basically the third line needs to intersect with the other two lines [and for some reason my second line is not showing up in the picture below, but it's there, I promise].

After scoring the whole sheet of paper, I cut it into strips.

Once I had the strips, it was easy to fold all the lines. [It looks fine if you don't crease them, but I thought it added a bit more definition.]

Once that was done, I just wrapped it around the largest part of the invite and secured it with washi tape.

After that, I slid the other pieces under the wrap, added some twine and ta-da! 

Final step was to put the invite in the envelope and seal it up. For the address labels I bought 8x10 kraft sticker paper and printed out all the addresses / return address. I cut them into strips [I fit four per sheet] and started by centering the return address on the back of the envelope.

Then I flipped the envelope and secured the rest of the label. 

There you have it! 

I still have a few other wedding paper projects to share, but I will save that for another post!
